God Was, and Is, in Aurora

I would like to extend my prayers and deepest condolences to those people involved in the Aurora tragedy.

To those who would ask, as they do whenever there is any tragedy, “where was your loving God?”, I would say this.

1 James 4:8 “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

God was right there. He was with those who called on His name, either to protect them or to lead them safely home to Him. He is with those families involved who believe in Him and turn to Him, and He is providing solace and comfort in a time of deep loss.

He is sitting with all who call on His name, and He weeps with them. He mourns those whom have refused to trust in Him.

At midnight, walk into a dark room and turn on the lights. Light overtakes darkness, and darkness has no recourse but to retreat. It has no choice. It cannot prevail when light is introduced.

If you shut off the light, the darkness rules.

We cannot continue to shut out the light of God – tell Him He is not welcome nor relevant in our lives, our morality. our decisions, our laws, our precepts, our country. We cannot continue to fill our minds with dark and sinful images in songs, TV, movies and literature, and expect there to be light.

We cannot keep the light switched to “off” and then blame the light for not protecting us against the dark.

Where is God? He is waiting for us to turn on the light, and reject darkness.

For those who would wonder “How can a loving God sit by and watch these things happen?”, I assure you it breaks His heart. But where would you have God intervene un-invited in your life?

“Well, He should have He should have stopped James Holmes.”

Should He also stop you from viewing pornography, knowing that in two years it will destroy your marriage? Should He stop us from drinking alcohol at a party, because He knows an accident will occur? Should He stop you from speaking evil against someone?

No. In the ultimate expression of love God has given His children free will. He does not intervene uninvited, and treat us like marionettes.

To stop all evil, to follow the chain back to the root causes, would mean God would have to take our free will and make us puppets.

1 John 5:19 We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one .

We have a culture which wants to do whatever they want, whenever they want, but blame others for the consequences.  We have now made God that target.

We don’t want Him telling us anything about how to live our lives, but when things go wrong, He is the first to get blamed. Sorry folks, it doesn’t work that way.

If we keep the light switched to “off” , darkness wins.

If we choose to let the light in, light wins.

It’s pretty simple, actually.

Where was God when Aurora happened? If you could see the spiritual realm, you would have seen shafts of light shining all over that theater, onto His people. There are beams of light shining through the darkness in Aurora today. He shines His light into every life He is asked into.

If you want to know where God is, humbly ask Him to reveal Himself in your life. He will be there before your next breath.

With love and respect to the families affected in this and every other tragedy brought on by the absence of God’s light. Not by His choice – by ours.
